We are spilling the beans about our new project!
First Years Early Childhood Consulting and Vegepod have teamed up to bring healthy eating and sustainability to Early Childhood Services.
The concept of paddock to plate is often a foreign concept for young children, so we are working to make a change.
Using the Vegepod gardening beds, First Years Early Childhood Consulting has designed the KindyGarden Program. This program consists of 5 easy to read lesson formats that help the children prepare the beds, plant the seeds and harvest the produce within 10 weeks. This is perfect for term by term preschools or long day cares that want to share it between different aged children.
The program was developed in collaboration with First Years, Dr Kate Neale from the Centre for Children and Young People, Southern Cross University and Vegepod. It has been created to encourage early childhood learning centres to create greenspaces in their facilities, and allow children to take an active lead in how the space is used and enjoyed.
The program not only teaches children all about gardening and gives them an opportunity to taste some organic and yummy produce at its peak of freshness, but each lesson links to certain principles, practices and learning outcomes of the Early Years Learning Framework, demonstrating how children learn and develop a wide range of skills through doing and playing.
We have taken the hard work out, by linking each lesson plan to the Early Years Learning Framework and providing observation templates for educators to record children’s learning in relation to each lesson. All you need to do is add photos.
Each KindyGarden program pack will also have information which highlights how the KindyGarden Program helps the service in meeting different elements of the National Quality Framework.
For those services and educators in Queensland and Northern New South Wales, Vegepod has a stall at the EKKA this weekend and will be doing regular demonstrations about the Vegepod and the KindyGarden Program.
